The NHS Pension Scheme - Terminal Illness

If you have been unfortunately diagnosed as suffering a terminal illness and have less than twelve months to live you may be able to exchange part of your Ill Health Retirement Pension and lump sum, including any increased membership, for a bigger lump sum payment. This facility is known as "Commutation".

The lump sum payment will be equal to five times the Ill Health Pension in excess of the guaranteed minimum pension plus retirement sum.

Any dependants will still be eligible to claim any pension they are entitled to in full.
